At the base of your vagina, there lies a little, delicate bit of tissue called the hymen. It is made up of tissue leftovers from the development of the fetus. Your hymen is particular to you and can alter over time in terms of size, shape, and thickness.

The elastic tissue in your hymen can stretch as you move. While it is significantly thicker at birth, it gradually thins out and loses suppleness with time as a result of hormones, activities, the use of tampons, or intercourse.

Your hymen develops like your vagina does during fetal development. Your vagina is initially just a tube. The tubes remain to form your hymen as it disintegrates and the vaginal aperture widens.

What does a hymn look like?

The color of your hymen matches that of the skin around your vagina (flesh-colored). It may surround your vaginal opening or take the shape of a crescent moon just below it.

Because doing so would prevent menstrual blood from leaving your body, it does not completely cover the vaginal entrance.

How does the hymen look when it's broken?

Your hymen could resemble a little piece of tissue that has been shifted to one side if it is broken.

You can’t feel a ripped hymen with your finger and it’s difficult to see. Sometimes, it recombines with the vaginal entrance.

How do you know if your hymen is still there?

You can use a mirror to look in it and check to see whether your hymen is still there. Your hymen is visible as a small bit of tissue at the base of your vaginal entrance.

Hymen breakage signs

You most likely won’t be able to tell if your hymen is still whole. Light spotting or bleeding, pain, or exposed skin at your vaginal opening can all be symptoms of a damaged hymen.

Your hymen often ages naturally over time. Sometimes, once it breaks, it will reappear in your vagina as a tiny flap of skin.

Healthy normal hymen

Your hymen can be found in a variety of sizes, forms, and places surrounding your vaginal opening.

The two most typical hymen types are crescentic and annular, which surround the entire vaginal entrance (shaped like a crescent moon).

These positions are thought to be typical. The vaginal aperture is located in the middle of the donut-like annular hymen. At the base of the vaginal entrance lies a crescentic hymen.

It can obscure the vaginal entrance and lead to problems in rare instances. A crescentic-shaped hymn instead of an annular one is typically present by the time a child enters elementary school.

Breaking the virginity

Hymen breakage is not related to losing your virginity. Or breakage of the hymen due to other physical activity does not lead to losing virginity. You only lose your virginity when you have sexual intercourse.

What exercises break your hymen?

The hymen may become damaged or rupture as a result of routine activity. It’s crucial to understand that the hymen is a flexible tissue structure that gradually deteriorates until it tears.

If it does tear, you can experience pain or see blood. The following common behaviors can be your hymen break reasons:

  • A bicycle-ride.
  • Astride a horse.
  • Using a jungle gym to climb.
  • A strenuous workout.
  • Putting in a tampon.
  • Getting a Pap or pelvic exam.

Your hymen may tear if your vaginal area comes into contact with anything. Women frequently don’t remember when or how their hymen broke. Everyone has a unique experience.

Can the hymen grow back?

No, once the hymen has been stretched open, it cannot grow back. The hymen is a band of fleshy tissue that spans a portion of your vaginal entrance. The first time you engage in vaginal sex, the hymen may get stretched open. Your hymen might open for reasons other than just having vaginal sex.

Can the hymen repair naturally?

And the answer remains the same, No.

Does everyone bleed the first time they have sex?

Bleeding during the first time of period is not always necessary. When your hymen is broken because of sexual intercourse then only bleeding is possible. Your hymen doesn’t need to rupture during your first sexual encounter.

Exercise or inserting a tampon are examples of common behaviors that can cause your hymen to rupture before having sex.

It’s also possible that the first time you have sex, it does break. You might see blood and experience a little discomfort if this occurs.

Does it hurt when your hymen breaks?

While some people are aware of when their hymen breaks, others are not. Your hymen may stretch, just like other tissues in your body, and is flexible.

Usually, the first time it is pressed on, it doesn’t tear. Instead, it wears down to the point where it breaks. If you tore a muscle or fractured a bone, the agony would not be as intense right away.

When a hymen breaks, some people may feel pain or minor bleeding, but the majority won’t.

Being a flexible piece of tissue, it stretches and deteriorates with time as a result of daily activities or tampon use. Many people mistake bleeding after your hymen breaks for their menstruation or spotting.

Septate hymen

When your hymen has an extra piece of skin or tissue running through it, creating two separate holes rather than one, this condition is known as a septate hymen.

The tissue that encircles the vaginal opening is known as the hymen. Your vaginal opening shouldn’t be covered or blocked by it.

Extra hymenal tissue results in two tiny vaginal openings rather than one if your hymen is septate. Your vaginal entrance is blocked by the additional band of tissue. It is also known as a thick hymen.

Symptoms of a septate hymen include:

  • Having trouble putting in or taking out a tampon.
  • painful sexual activity.
  • After-sex bleeding or discomfort (when the septate hymen tears).

Why does a hymen septate?

Having septate hymens is a congenital abnormality (you are born with it). Nobody is certain as to why it affects certain people and not others.
